Maria Chrysostomou

Reflexologist and Reiki Practitioner

Maria has worked in health and well being since 2001. Having previously worked in the fitness industry, the main focus is on the body's physical needs, but her interests and awareness also extended to the body's emotional and mental needs; and this is what brought her into natural/holistic health, and what she brings to her practice today.

Maria spent a year working for the Association of Reflexologist, the organisation she completed her training with. This provided her with an invaluable insight into the world of reflexology and gave her the opportunity to converse with some highly competent and well respected reflexologist and teachers.

Maria is a full member of the Association of Reflexologists (AoR), and an authorised member of the Vertical Reflex Therapy (VRT) network.

Therapies

Therapies available are, Reflexolgy, including Vertical Reflex Therapy (VRT), Reiki and Thai Foot Massage.

The above therapies can help us through illness and difficult emotional times, which can be due to stress, tension, anxiety, injury, emotional upset or aches and pains.

Receiving these therapies helps to release tension in the body and clear the mind, which can lead to improved sleep and mood.  This gives us an increased sense of relaxation and well being, and in turn enables us to cope better with our current circumstances/situation.

Releasing tension held in the body and mind, and improving sleep has a great affect on how the body deals with stress and illness.  Being in a relaxed state is imortant to be able to cerate and maintain well being.  The internal systems of the body are able to function more efficiently when we are relaxed.

Reflexology, reiki and Thai foot massage are holistic systems of health,  meaning that the person is viewed as a 'whole' rather than just the physical symptoms that are currently present.  The physical, emotional and mental well being aspects of the person all influence one other, therefore, all are considered.

Reflexology

More than a foot massage - a therapuetic treatment for mind, body and emotions; as well as the feet

DSC04219.JPG

Reflexology is an ancient natural health therapy dating back some 5,000 years.

It is the practise of applying pressure with fingers and thumbs to reflex points on the feet that relate to all organs, glands and parts of the body.

Applying pressure to these reflexes works to restore and maintain the body’s natural balance, creating a feeling of vitality and well-being.

There are hundreds of nerve endings in the feet and it is thought that stimulation of these nerves is one way that reflex works.

The trained hands of a reflexologist can feel differences in tone of the reflexes on the feet, this is how we interpret imbalances within each person.  Working these points helps to release tension and increase circulation, which helps the body regain its natural balance, physically, emotionally and mentally.

Regular reflexology sessions can help us deal with the effects of stress, injury, illness and disease. To a reflexologist, tension and congestion in the body are mirrored in the feet, so by working the feet we are helping to send messages throughout all the systems of the body which encourages healing throughout.

Vertical Reflex Therapy is incorporated into a conventional reflexology treatment and is used at the beginning and/or end of the session.  It is done in a standing (vertical) position, and the reflexes on the top of the feet are worked.

When standing we are bearing weight down onto the feet and this seems to create a more direct link between the foot reflexes and parts of the body, thereby accelerating the response.

The hands can also be worked in conjunction with the feet to create a stronger link between the two, especially when using the ‘zonal triggers’ around the ankles.

Thai Foot Massage

Thai Foot Massage is a massage of the lower legs and feet.  It is wonderfully relaxing and energising

Thai foot massage image.jpg

Thai foot massage involves hands-on stretching and massage of the lower legs and feet to open the Sen lines; energy channels in the legs and feet from the Ayurvedic tradition.  Opening up these energy channels helps to balance and harmonise the flow of energy around the body.

As well as using the hands to massage the legs and feet, a specialised, round ended stick is also used on the feet to stimulate reflex points which correspond to the internal organs of the body.

Thai foot massage is a refreshing and revitalising massage that is deeply relaxing.  A firm pressure is used throughout on both the legs and the feet. The practitioner usually works to the beat of their heart or to the rate of their breathing with a depth of pressure to match.

Thai foot massage helps to improve circulation in the legs and feet, reduces stiffness and increases flexibility.  It can also help to improve sleep and help lessen stress and anxiety.
